Do I need a mat?

Adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl come on their own backing and can be cut without a mat. You need a mat for cardstock, paper, fabric, and any material without a carrier sheet. Using a mat with vinyl anyway is fine and can improve tracking on small or intricate cuts.

Making a mat last

• Leave the clear cover sheet on when storing. It keeps dust and lint off the adhesive, which is what kills mats.
• Peel material off the mat rather than lifting the mat off the material — that's what curls it.
• When tack drops off, wash the surface gently with warm water and a little dish soap, then air dry fully. Most mats can be revived several times this way.
• Store flat, never rolled or folded.
